The most honest map I have seen was hand drawn on a napkin
It had four things on it: a road, a river, a tree, and the word HERE. It got me where I was going faster than the app did, because it threw away everything that was not a decision point.
Most maps fail by including too much. A good map is a list of moments where you could go wrong, and nothing else. I think that is true of instructions, recipes, and most explanations too.

My grandmother gave directions entirely in landmarks that no longer exist. "Left where the bakery was." Somehow it still worked, which says something about how much of navigation is memory.
